About 71st annual San Francisco Juneteenth

The 71st annual San Francisco Juneteenth activities will held from Monday, June 14 through Saturday, June 20 with virtual and in person events!

Juneteenth celebrates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States, when African Americans in Texas were told of their freedom over 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation. The San Francisco festival is the largest gathering of African-Americans in Northern California which began in the early 1950s when Wesley F. Johnson Sr., once owner of the Texas Playhouse on Fillmore Street, invited all Bay Area African-Americans to celebrate June 19 in his lounge.
